I’ve wasted a lot of money on skincare over the years — products that sounded perfect and did nothing. What finally changed that wasn’t a better product. It was a better habit: writing things down. Once I started recording my experience honestly, I stopped repeating the same expensive mistakes. So here are the five things I always note when I try something new. If you only keep one skincare habit, let it be this one.
Why I record instead of just remembering
Memory lies, especially about skincare. Three weeks later, you can’t recall whether a serum actually helped or whether you just liked the packaging. Writing it down turns “I think it worked?” into real evidence you can trust. These five points are my standard — the exact things I note for every product.
1. My skin’s condition
Before and during use. What was my skin like when I started — dry? Dark spots? Irritated? And what actually changed while I used it? Without this baseline, there’s no way to judge whether a product did anything. This is the most important note, and the one most people skip.
2. How long I used it
First impressions are unreliable. A product can feel great for three days and disappoint over three weeks — or feel average at first and prove itself over a month. So I always note how long I genuinely used it. A review after two days means almost nothing; a review after a full jar means everything.
3. What I used it with
Products rarely work alone. If a serum seemed to help, was it really the serum — or the moisturizer I layered over it? I note the rest of my routine at the time, so I’m not giving credit (or blame) to the wrong product.
4. What I liked, and what bothered me
Both sides, honestly. The texture, the smell, how it felt, whether it irritated me, whether it fit my active life. I force myself to name at least one thing that bothered me — because nothing is perfect, and the honest downsides are exactly what I’d want to know before buying.
5. Whether I’d buy it again
The real verdict. Not “is it nice,” but “would I actually spend my own money on it again?” That single question cuts through all the hype. And I get specific: repurchase always, only seasonally, or never again.
Put it together
These five notes take about two minutes to jot down, and they’ve saved me a lot of money and disappointment. Here’s the quick version to keep handy:
- Skin condition — before and during
- Duration — how long I really used it
- Paired products — what else was in my routine
- Pros and cons — honestly, both
- Repurchase? — the real test
The takeaway
You don’t need to be an expert to review skincare well. You just need to write down the honest truth about your own experience — these five things, every time. Do it for a few months and you’ll know your own skin better than any advertisement ever could. That’s the whole reason I keep this diary.
