Walking and Light Hiking Days: How I Care for My Skin Before and After

Not every active day is a golf round or a swim. Some days I just want to walk, or take an easy hike. It feels gentler — but here’s something I’ve learned the hard way: your skin doesn’t know the difference between “serious sport” and “just a walk.” If you’re outside in the sun for an hour or two, your skin is working just as hard. So I treat these days with the same care. Here’s my before-and-after routine for walking and light hiking.

Why “easy” outdoor days still need care

A relaxed walk feels low-stakes, so it’s tempting to skip the prep. But:

  • The sun doesn’t take it easy. An hour of midday walking is real UV exposure — the kind that deepens dark spots over time.
  • You’re often less prepared. On a casual walk you’re not thinking about reapplying sunscreen the way you would on the course.
  • Sweat and wind still happen. Especially on a hike, even a gentle one.

So the goal is simple: protect before, repair after — just at a lighter level than a full round.

Before I head out

My pre-walk routine is quick but non-negotiable:

  • Sunscreen, properly applied. Even for a short walk. This is the single most important step for preventing new dark spots. On longer or sunnier days, I bring it to reapply.
  • A hat and sunglasses. The easiest protection there is — shade for my face and the delicate skin around my eyes.
  • Light moisturizer underneath. Hydrated skin handles sun and wind better than dry, tight skin.

That’s it. Two minutes before I walk out the door.

What I bring along

For anything longer than a short stroll:

  • Sunscreen to reapply
  • Water (hydrated skin starts from the inside)
  • On a hike: a light balm for lips, which burn and dry out easily

When I get home

This is the part most people skip — and it’s where the real care happens:

  1. Cleanse gently to wash off sunscreen, sweat, and dust.
  2. Soothe and hydrate — if my face feels warm or flushed from the sun, a calming, hydrating step settles it down.
  3. Moisturize to rebuild what the sun and wind pulled out.
  4. Check my skin. I take a quick look — any new redness or dryness tells me what my skin needs that night.

The takeaway

A walk or an easy hike isn’t “a day off” for your skin — it’s still a day outdoors. Protect before, repair after, and your skin stays comfortable and even-toned instead of slowly accumulating sun damage. At 55, these small, consistent habits on ordinary active days are exactly what keep my skin healthy. It’s never the one big thing. It’s the little things, every time.
